SHUTTING IT DOWN FOR MAY DAY
May Day 2026 is underway, and it’s going to be the biggest in American history. We’ve already kicked off the first of more than 4,000 actions - road closures, student walkouts, rallies, teach-ins. Countless people will be participating in the shutdown - no work, no school, no commerce. Today will be a short issue as I’m heading out to one of many events in Boston today myself!
Let’s take part in making May Day Strong too big for the authoritarians and the billionaires to ignore. We can find actions near us at their website and on Mobilize.
We can also increase the visibility on social media! Let’s be searching the #WorkersOverBillionaires and #MayDayStrong tags on our preferred platforms and sharing highlights from the day. We can also use them to post our own photos and videos, and tag @MayDayStrong. (And of course, you can send them to us as well - we’ll run them throughout next week in the list and our Instagram!)
If we’re not able to make it into the streets, let’s still make sure we’re doing what’s in our power. We can commit to no commerce here and share this image to show the movement is going further that is visible from the ground.
Our friends at Stand Up for Science (Science Fight Club) are hosting an accessible, virtual rally at 12:00PM ET, featuring folks like Reps. Delia Ramirez and Adelita Grijalva and New Disabled South founder Dom Kelly. We can register to join them here.
COMMENT ON RULE THAT COULD COST 3.7 MILLION PEOPLE RENTAL ASSISTANCE BY END OF DAY
We’re celebrating International Workers’ Day with rallies, strikes, walk-outs and teach-ins. The Trump Administration is marking it by trying to make it harder to keep a roof over our heads. Today is the comment deadline for a proposed rule from the Department of Housing and Urban Development that would impose strict time limits and “work requirements” as a condition for rental subsidies.
As experts like Pamela Herd and Donald Moynihan keep emphasizing, “work requirements” don’t make people work - they make people do paperwork, and and ensure folks who public services are meant to help lose access when they struggle with the demands of the bureaucracy. Analysts have estimated this effort threatens rental assistance for 3.7 million Americans, exposing them to significantly greater danger of eviction and homelessness. More than half of those at risk are children.
We can submit comments before close of business opposing more red-tape evictions at the Federal Register here. We can find tips on how to comment effectively from the National Alliance to End Homelessness here, research we can cite via Can We Still Govern? here and talking points and a tool to make it easier for us to weigh in from the Alliance for Housing Justice here.
