THE ANTI-IMMIGRANT HATE MUST BE REJECTED
Republicans continue to fearmonger about Springfield, Ohio as they try to ride bigotry to an election victory. Yesterday, Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) posted a vile tweet repeating the same racist lies about Haitian refugees and issuing ominous threats about the retaliation they’ll face if Trump is elected. We need to stop these folks, and we need to make sure they know when they lose it’s because our country is rejecting this sort of hate. United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led network in the country, is doing text banks throughout this election season to make sure voters recognize immigrants are here to stay and encourage folks to push back against the enablers of xenophobia. Let’s sign up to join them and text tonight and every Thursday. (We can also show our support with a donation to the Haitian Bridge Alliance, and text SIGN PGZKAP to 50409 to add our names to this Resistbot letter supporting the proposed censure of Rep. Higgins.)
ANOTHER GREAT TEXTING OPPORTUNITY WITH BLACK VOTERS MATTER
Black Voters Matter’s goal is to increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities through effective voting that allows a community to determine its own destiny. Every Tuesday at 6 PM ET, they host a group texting event. During the event they will provide training, discuss their latest texting campaign, and show us how to text. Let’s join in these Texting Tuesdays! (h/t CFAA)
KEY DEM HOUSE TARGET CAUGHT IN ETHICS SCANDAL
Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, a Long Island Republican representing a district Biden won by 14 points in 2020, has long been a top Democratic target. Our job may have just gotten a little easier, as the New York Times has revealed he may have broken House ethics rules by putting both his fiancée’s daughter and the woman he was cheating on her mother with on the congressional payroll. This adds to a long list of ethical failures by D’Esposito, who also put friends and family on the payroll as a town councilman and who as a New York City police officer required the city to pay out a six-figure settlement after he was accused of lying to a grand jury and the district attorney’s office. His tenure in Congress has been marked by demonizing immigrants and he’s trafficked in antisemitic tropes on the campaign trail. His Democratic challenger is Laura Gillen, a former town council member who is running on protecting reproductive rights and her record of holding corporations accountable for polluting our water supply. Let’s sign up to phonebank with the Sierra Club and help take down D’Esposito here.
HELP GEORGIA DEMOCRATS PROTECT THE VOTE
With all the voter suppression activities going on in Georgia these days, the state needs all the help it can get to protect the vote. One way we can help is to join the Georgia Democratic Party’s Voter Protection Program! If we are in the state, we can try poll watching, working the voter hotline, ballot curing, and more! Volunteer trainings will continue through October, and we can sign up here. If we are out of state volunteers, there is work for us here. We can canvass, make calls, and learn more about traveling to Georgia to help out as well here.
QUICK ACCESS TO REPRODUCIBLE TALKING POINTS
Card Campaign is creating a series of two-sided cards that present verified facts about how the two main presidential candidates address issues that concern all Americans. They are sharing the templates for these cards so we can print or have them printed (in three different .pdf styles) and then distribute them in our town. They also offer the cards as .jpgs for sharing on social media. They currently have 13 cards on 13 issues, the newest of which is on crime. Other issues include healthcare, immigration, Project 2025, and economy. Let’s check out these cards and use them as talking points when we interact with voters. Â
