HELP GET OUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL VOTE
According to the Environmental Voter Project, 40% of youth in swing states say they will only vote for a candidate who makes climate action a priority. Harris and Trump have extremely different views on climate change, with Harris supporting many progressive measures and Trump wanting to abandon the progress made by the Biden administration and return to fossil fuels. Let’s make sure younger voters and everyone who cares about our future are aware of the differences and consider donating to Sunrise, a youth movement that is currently engaging in a massive youth voter contact to elect champions of the Green New Deal. We can also get involved with the Environmental Voter Project's efforts to make phone calls and canvass neighborhoods in key elections this year here.
THE BLUE DOT IN OMAHA
If the Blue Wall of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania holds, Kamala Harris only needs one more electoral vote to secure the presidency – and that vote could come from the Nebraska Second Congressional District. NE-02 also features a competitive House race between Republican incumbent Don Bacon and Democratic state senator Tony Vargas – making it a battleground for the White House and the House of Representatives, along with a crucial source of votes to secure abortion rights and paid sick leave for Nebraskans. Recent polling suggests both Harris and Vargas are in the lead, but it’s still anyone’s race. The Vargas campaign is holding virtual phonebanks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Let’s sign up to help out here.
ORGANIZE A PHONE BANK PARTY - TRAINING TUESDAY
Grassroots Organization Project, which supports and advocates for volunteer leaders of pro-democracy grassroots groups, is hosting an online training that will teach us how our group can be a hub for the phone bank of a candidate. This Zoom event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th at 8 pm EDT and will end in time for the presidential debate. Let’s sign up here.
VOTING TO END FORCED LABOR IN OUR PRISON SYSTEM
The authors of the 13th Amendment left a loophole, allowing slavery to be imposed as punishment for a crime and giving constitutional sanction to convict leasing and our abusive prison labor system. Advocates for justice are pushing to end this exception at both the federal and the state level, finally competing the work of abolition and providing an opening for crucial reforms to extend worker protections to incarcerated persons. In the last three cycles, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont have passed abolition ballot measures, and we have more opportunities this November. Voters in both California and Nevada will have a chance to amend their state constitutions to bar slavery from being used as a punishment for a crime. We can take part in this fight for freedom and against the multi-billion dollar prison-industrial complex! Let’s help out by donating to or volunteering with:· CALIFORNIA: Yes on Prop 6, End Slavery in California
· NEVADA: ACLU of Nevada
· NATIONAL: Abolish Slavery National Network
REGISTER VOTERS WITH OUR OWN VOTER REGISTRATION PORTAL
The voter-registration organization When We All Vote, created by Michelle Obama, has a new way to help us help others get registered to vote. We sign up to get our own personalized voter registration link and register as many voters as we can. When someone registers using our link, they start getting reminders from When We All Vote about upcoming elections in their state. And we can watch our progress in getting people registered! Let’s sign up for our own voter registration portal and start registering voters.
