HOW WE BUILD ON MAY DAY STRONG
Friday was the largest one-day strike in the United States in 80 years, as we transition our resistance to authoritarianism and oligarchy from mass protest to mass non-compliance and disruption. Huge numbers of Americans followed through on the no work, no school, no commerce pledge. Millions took part in more than 5,000 actions, from rallies to walk-outs to sit-ins to teach-ins to shutdowns. We closed school districts, bridges, stores and airports.
But May Day Strong was never intended to be the finish line. It’s the starting gun for the escalation of our efforts. We need to keep building and keep growing, exercising and strengthening our muscles for the race ahead. Here’s some steps we can take next:
🫱🏻🫲🏿 TOMORROW at 8PM ET, May Day Strong will be holding a mass call to discuss next steps. We’ll hear what’s coming up on our calendar as we start the build towards Labor Day and how we can get plugged into long-term organizing. We can sign up to learn more here. 🫱🏾🫲🏼
🫱🏻🫲🏿 Spoiler alert: one of the priorities will be building community resilience, the networks that help us take care of each other while we engage in non-compliance. The more folks know they can rely on their neighbors to help keep them keep making ends meet during a strike, the more willing they’ll be to take part. The Strike Ready Corps and Freedom Trainers are continuing to hold trainings on what that looks like in practice, with the next one coming Tuesday, May 19th. We can sign up to learn more here. We can also connect with local organizations in our area who are already doing this work, with the list of May Day coalition partners being a great place to start. 🫱🏾🫲🏼
🫱🏻🫲🏿 Some of the most powerful actions on Friday were those targeting corporate targets, from Elon Musk’s AI facilities in Memphis to the New York Stock Exchange. We don’t need to wait for a national day of action to shake up the billionaires and the big companies. Sunrise led a sit-in at a Hilton housing seniors ICE officials, and we can build on their work by joining in their reserve-and-cancel campaign targeting this hotel chain. They took over a Home Depot in Los Angeles, and we follow in their footsteps by conducting an icescraper action at our own guided by this toolkit. The De-ICE Citizens Bank and Boycott Citizens have brought major institutional actors on board with their effort to make the bank choose between financing ICE detention and the rest of their customers, and we can join in their organizing efforts here and here. 🫱🏾🫲🏼
💵 Finally, we can continue putting our money behind the folks who are building worker power. In recent months, some of the best minds in labor organizing have rolled out Union Now, a new national worker power and organizing fund where we can give to support impactful organizing and supplement strike funds. Let’s consider making a donation here. 💵
(And one more thing - if you made it out to a protest or action on May Day, please send us your photos! We’ll be running more of them in this week’s issue - email is roganlisttips@gmail.com.)
MIFEPRISTONE ACCESS UNDER ATTACK BY GOP JUDGES
Thanks to the FDA under President Biden allowing mifepristone to be prescribed via telehealth and shield laws effectively allowing blue state health-care providers to continue to provide reproductive care to those living under forced birth laws, the number of abortions in America has not decreased since the Dobbs decision. We have managed to successfully fight a rear-guard action against the anti-choice movement, even as they continued to tighten the screws. Naturally, they were not going to let that go unchallenged. On Friday, the GOP-dominated Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked that FDA rule, as part of what Jessica Valenti has described as “the biggest attack on abortion since the end of Roe.” (We’re heavily following her recommendations for action, and if you’re not subscribed to Abortion, Every Day now is the time.)
Drugmakers filed an appeal asking for the order to be paused and an immediate Supreme Court hearing on Saturday. In addition, doctors can still prescribe misoprostol, the other abortion drug, via telehealth, and some providers are planning to continue to ship mifepristone while the litigation plays out. But we have a hell of a fight ahead of us, and misinformation and uncertainty risks women who should be able to exercise their right to choose believing they’re unable to.
Jessica Valenti has highlighted that it would be helpful for attorneys general and governors of the 22 shield law states to make publicly clear that they will continue to protect providers who ship abortion pills while the litigation goes on. 🗣️ If we’re in one of those states, let’s contact our governors and AGs to demand they do so today. For the New Yorkers, we can urge Kathy Hochul to sign S8544/A9217, specifically protecting providers if the FDA’s approval status for mifepristone changes. 🗣️
🔁 Let’s help ensure everyone knows the facts: mifepristone is safe to use, and it is still accessible. We can: 🔁
find a social media toolkit we can use to promote Plan C’s search tool for where folks can obtain their pills
🙋♀️ Ineedana.com also has info on how anyone who needs it can access medication abortion, plus state and local laws, our nearest clinics, and support we can obtain. Their site is continually updated. Let’s spread the word about it – and if we’re looking for something higher commitment to do, let’s apply as volunteers to help them keep their data up-to-date and as useful as possible. 🙋♂️
📢 Make sure we’re sharing info on If/When/How’s Repro Legal Hotline at 844-868-2812 to anyone who needs it. 📢
🗣️ Remind Congress that 64% of Americans say women who live in states where abortion is illegal should be able to receive mifepristone from a doctor in a state where it’s legal, and we want them to legally secure access regardless of what the courts do. We can find an email tool and language we can use for calls from Women’s March here.🗣️
A KEY LEGISLATIVE ELECTION TOMORROW AND BUILDING FOR MORE THIS FALL
Tomorrow marks a special election in Michigan’s 35th State Senate District. Firefighter, Marine vet and union man Chedrick Greene is the Democratic nominee against pro union-busting MAGA lawyer Jason Tunney for a seat Kamala won by 0.8% in 2024. Greene is emphasizing protecting voting rights, expanding the earned income tax credit for working families and establishing new tax credits to make child care more affordable.
A GOP win would tie the Senate 19-19, worsening the gridlock in Lansing in a session where bills have already been moving at a historically low rate and kneecapping Governor Whitmer’s ability to pass anything during her last months in office. ☎️ We have one last chance to help get voters out for Chedrick! Let’s join States Win for a phonebank shift TOMORROW from 12-2PM here. ☎️
Fortunately, we have plenty more opportunities to help reshape legislatures across the nation even if we can’t volunteer for Chedrick Greene. States Win and its affiliates will be running regular phonebanks from now through November in these downballot races, where a little effort can make a big difference. Here’s their full schedule:
☎️ MONDAYS: 5-7PM ET with States Win Yolo for Mai Xiong (MI, HD-13) and Stephanie Simacek (AZ, House LD-2) or 6:30-8:00 PM ET with States Win MA-RI for Lisa Grafstein (NC, SD-13) and Jaime Churches (MI, HD-27) ☎️
☎️ TUESDAYS: 6-8PM ET with States Win National for endorsed candidates in multiple swing districts or 6:30-8PM ET with States Win NYC for Woodson Bradley (NC, SD-42) and Evonne Hopkins (NC, HD-35) ☎️
☎️ THURSDAYS: 4-6PM ET with States Win National for endorsed candidates in multiple swing districts ☎️
☎️ SATURDAYS: 12-2PM ET with States Win National for endorsed candidates in multiple swing districts; 1PM-3PM ET with States Win CA Peninsula for Hadley Haas (PA, HD-44), Chris Thomas (PA, SD-24) and Robyn Vining (WI, SD-5); 2-3:30PM ET with States Win Portland for Lisa Grafstein (NC, SD-13) and Lindsey Prather (NC, HD-115) ☎️
BE A FORCE MULTIPLIER AGAINST A FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY GIVEAWAY
Lost amidst what was mostly a pretty terrible week on Capitol Hill: we managed to rally a large and bipartisan coalition to successfully remove the Cancer Gag Act from the House version of the Farm Bill. The legislation as a whole has a long way to go to get Senate approval, but one way or another we can be confident it won’t prevent lawsuits against pesticide companies like Trump donors Bayer-Monsanto for poisoning us with carcinogens.
Now we can turn our attention to another effort to give corporations special protection from accountability: Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX)’s recently introduced bill last week that would provide a “liability shield” for Big Oil, giving them immunity from suits holding them responsible for their role in the climate crisis. We can read a full summary about this fight here, but the bottom line is: no way in hell. ☎️ Food & Water Watch is bringing together activists this THURSDAY from 7PM-10:30PM ET to phonebank supporters and patch them through to their senators to register their opposition to this measure. Let’s sign up to join them here. ☎️
We can also find call scripts, a letter-to-the-editor tool and social media toolkit for this fight here.
THIS WEEK’S JUDGES TO THANK
Facing threats, political pressure and a Supreme Court that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting!
Judge Susan Brnovich has dismissed a Justice Department lawsuit against Arizona, which sought access to the state’s voter records. ✍🏼 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Brnovich for preventing another attempt by the DOJ to gain access to our private information. ✍🏼
