VIRGINIA’S RESPONSE TO TRUMP GERRYMANDERING GOES TO THE VOTERS APRIL 21
While we’re waiting for results from Maine and Pennsylvania, let’s start getting engaged in another big special election in Virginia. The state’s Democrats are fighting Trump’s efforts to rig the House map with some redistricting of their own, drawing temporary new congressional districts that could give us 10 out of 11 seats. Now we have to pass a constitutional amendment at the ballot box on April 21st to put them into effect. Republicans are still trying to stop the referendum in the courts, but with early voting set to begin March 6th we have to get to work earning yes votes right now. ✋ Here’s some ways we can volunteer: ✋

MOMENTUM BUILDING FOR TAXING DETENTION CENTER PROFITS AS NEW JERSEY INTRODUCES BILL
ICE’s detention camps are causing untold suffering with unsanitary conditions, inadequate food, water and health care and violent staff. They are also making the private prison companies that operate them a fortune. GeoGroup and CoreCivic both just reported more than $2 billion in revenue in 2025, up 6% and 13%. GeoGroup profits went up nearly 700%. That’s money cut from our health care, and their CEOS are assuring investors it’s only going to grow this year.
As we covered earlier this month, state lawmakers are pushing back at the deportation machine by going after these profits, with a first-in-the-nation bill introduced in California to impose a 50% tax on profits from private ICE detention centers and redirect the money to immigrant services. Now New Jersey is following suit, with Assemblyman Ravi Bhalla proposing similar legislation with A4300 last week.

PASS NEW SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA AS UKRAINE FIGHTS ON
Four years ago today, Putin’s Russia began a fullscale invasion of Ukraine. U.S. intelligence reported at the time the Russians expected to be in Kyiv in 72 hours. Kyiv, and all Ukraine, still stand, and still fight for their freedom.
In the last year, they’ve done so with considerably less support from the United States. The Trump regime very publicly attempted to bully President Zelenskyy and repeatedly halted and deeply reduced military aid, leaving our European friends to try to fill in the shortfalls. Negotiations are stalled as Russia continues to demand Ukraine give up territory they haven’t won, and the White House is putting pressure on our allies to make more and more concessions.
Congress has proposed multiple bills to deepen sanctions on Russia that have earned bipartisan support. We need to put our country firmly on Ukraine’s side and move forward with them. 🔊 Let’s honor the losses of the last four years and reach out to our members of Congress demanding action on new Russian sanctions. STAND UP FOR SCIENCE RALLIES COMING TO 30 CITIES MARCH 7TH
We’ve got a very busy month of mass protests scheduled for March, and first on the docket is Stand Up For Science’s national day of action on March 7th. They’re pushing to focus attention on Trump’s efforts to dismantle and privatize American science and public health, undermine vaccines and ignore reality on climate change. We now have Take Back Our Science rallies scheduled for 30 cities nationwide. 🪧 Let’s find one near us to attend here and help spread the word in our communities. We can also consider hosting a pop-up protest of our own! 🪧
LEARNING TO BE AN EFFECTIVE ORGANIZER
Mass demonstrations like Stand Up for Science and No Kings (find events near us!) create huge energy, and it’s an organizer’s job to turn it into practical action. Solidarity Warriors offers trainings every Wednesday evening from 8-9:30PM ET on we can do it, featuring concrete lessons on how to get started and guest speakers on topics like immigrant rights, Indigenous history, cybersecurity, and how to protest safely.
