START THE FIGHT TO FIX THE SUPREME COURT IN THIS APPROPRIATIONS CYCLE
For all of Donald Trump’s continued tantrums about the justices blocking his tariffs, the October 2025 term has mostly seen right wingers getting their usual ransom payments from the hijacked Supreme Court.
From ignoring obvious racial animus to allow the mass de-documentation of more than one million people living in the United States legally, to making real John Roberts and Jim Crow’s dreams of destroying the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to letting the GOP cancel elections already underway to take advantage of it, to blocking tens of thousands of lawsuits over Monsanto products causing cancer, the justices gave the reactionaries, authoritarians and billionaires plenty to celebrate. (And we’re still waiting to hear what they’ll do about Trump’s attempts to write birthright citizenship out of the Constitution and radically expand his control over the Federal Reserve and other independent structures and another attack on federal campaign finance laws.) They’ve ignored their own precedents, their claims to loyalty to the original meaning of the Constitution, history and common sense, but they’ve served well in the exact role that Trump, Mitch McConnell and Leonard Leo intended as they’ve captured this institution: the judicial arm of the Republican Party.
Louisiana v. Callais in particular continued a line of decisions that make it harder for anyone to compete with these powers during elections. For the sake of progressive values and our democracy, we need our leaders to take action to rebalance and rebuild the Supreme Court, as soon as possible.
That work can start right now.
Congress is currently considering the Supreme Court’s appropriations request for the next fiscal year. They’re asking for a 10% funding boost in this year’s Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act (H.R. 8495), including 60% more for buildings and grounds care. While some of this is for security, it also includes an increase in pay and benefits, and as with most senior officials we are funding staff and administrative support, physical plant maintenance and travel for the justices that they do not necessarily need every penny of to function. Senators are threatening exactly this sort of funding right now to force Pete Hegseth to comply with their requests for information on the boat strikes and the slaughter of schoolchildren in Minab. 🗣️ Congressional Democrats can, and should, follow suit, pushing back against this request and opposing this bill if it does not cut the Court’s budget. 🗣️

I’ll be candid: given where we are in the appropriations process, the sheer number of other battles to fight in government spending, and the reality that no one’s seriously considering it yet, it’s not at all likely it will happen. But we should ask for it anyways. Why?
It’s a useful test for how serious individual Democrats are about the change we need to fix the Court
It’s an opportunity for us to communicate to Democratic electeds that we’re damn serious about it
If it gains elite support, it’s a form of pressure on the justices themselves
It helps reset the expectation in our politics that the Supreme Court will be treated as a political actor

TRUMP’S WAY OF SAYING HAPPY PRIDE MONTH: INCREASING TRANS HOMELESSNESS
The Republican demonization of the LGBTQ+ community has been on especially open display this Pride Month, from several states attempting to rebrand it to celebrate “nuclear families” to their growing pushback against marriage equality becoming impossible to ignore. They’re wrapping it up with an effort to literally force our trans siblings onto the streets.
Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development has proposed a rule that would eliminate gender identity protections in federal housing. This could allow federally-funded housing providers to discriminate against trans, intersex and nonbinary tenants and force federally-funded shelters to deny access to unhoused trans folks, particularly cruel for a community already experiencing disproportionate levels and risks of homelessness. ✍🏻 TODAY is the deadline to submit comments on the Federal Register against this policy. We have a number of opportunities to use the public comment process to object to Trump rules and projects this month. Let’s also take some time to weigh in on the environmental review process of ICE’s planned human warehouse in Williamsport, Maryland by Wednesday and the Postal Service’s participation in disrupting mail-in voting by Thursday.
SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH CARE IN DISTRICT DEMS LOST BY 799 VOTES
The American public is paying the price for Trump’s billionaire tax cuts with their health care. The Medicaid cuts have put more than 400 hospitals at risk of closure. More than 5 million people have dropped off Medicaid and Affordable Care Act coverage over the last 12 months. In Iowa, health care policy expert Charles Gaba has estimated more than 120,000 ACA enrollees have seen their health care costs increase by 51% this year - $1,700 apiece. But at least Elon Musk got a tax cut.
The representatives who made this possible need to be held accountable. In the Iowa First Congressional District, former state rep, engineer and working class kid Christina Bohannon has highlighted the damage to our already messed up health care system as she challenges GOP incumbent and crucial MAGA Murder Budget vote Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks.

ENDING A CONTRACT WITH THE LARGEST ICE CAMP IN THE NORTHEAST
The Moshannon Detention Center in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania has the capacity to hold almost 1,900 of our friends and neighbors, the largest ICE camps in the region. Most of the stories we hear out of this GEO Group-operated facility sound painfully familiar: captives denied necessary medical care, at least three deaths of folks held in their custody in the last three years, solitary confinement as a standard punishment, lack of access to clean water and legal counsel. But there is one thing that makes it different: it’s operated under a contract with both ICE and the government of Clearfield County, giving local officials a rare opportunity to push back directly.
The current contract expires this fall. Organizers have been packing county commission meetings asking them to not to renew it. We can help support their push. 📢 The Shut Down Detention campaign has put out a toolkit with multiple ways to build pressure to stop their complicity with Moshannon, including a petition we can sign here and calling and emailing commission members here. Let’s get to work, and follow them on social media to stay updated, signal boost and get more calls to action. 📢
LOCKED OUT FOR MORE THAN 100 DAYS
The fossil fuel giant BP has been one of the big winners of the Iran War, reporting first-quarter profits of more than $3.2 billion, doubling from the same time last year. Unsurprisingly, that wealth has not been trickling down. For more than three months, they’ve locked out more than 800 workers at the largest refinery in the Midwest for refusing to sign a contract that would lay off more than 100 union members and weaken safety protections. That’s a lot of folks in and around Whiting, Indiana going without a paycheck, but the folks at United Steelworkers Local 7-1 are holding strong.

I am curious about how the Cherokee Nation Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. feels about Delaney etc. In March his statement was - “Senator Mullin’s dedicated service in the U.S. Senate has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to progress and the well-being of all communities, including Indian country.”

What am I not getting about this? I assume this is about money?
Do the tribes really think Mullin will make them white enough to escape this rolling hit list? One would think history would be indicative of where this path leads.
