WARRANTLESS WIRETAPPING AUTHORITY IS DANGEROUS NO MATTER WHO HAS IT
Apparently warrantless wiretapping authority is so important it can’t have any limits like basic due process but not quite important enough for Trump to give up his hatchet man. With Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act set to expire Friday and Democrats holding firm that they won’t extend it while Bill Pulte serves as Director of National Intelligence, Trump is refusing to back off from installing Pulte in a position he clearly does not belong in. Senate Republicans are openly warning that they might not be able to get another extension passed.
This impasse could be an opportunity. These backdoor searches are a threat to our basic rights, and folks on both the right and the left have been pushing for warrant requirements and closing a loophole that allows the government to buy our sensitive information from data brokers. With the pro-surveillance Dems who the government normally would count on to back Section 702 furious about Trump wanting to put his attack dog in a sensitive position, privacy advocates have leverage. Let’s encourage them to take full advantage of it. 🗣️ We can find scripts and language here to push our members of Congress to take this moment and fight both for Pulte’s removal and long overdue guardrails on the surveillance state. 🗣️
In other news from Capitol Hill, the House passed another $70 billion in ICE-CBP funding yesterday, giving the deportation machine another huge infusion of cash without doing a thing to stop them from terrorizing us and theoretically bringing the fight over their appropriations to an end, for now. The vote was 214-212, with all voting Dems and totally-not-a-Republican Kevin Kiley against. There was, however, also some good news for a change, as the Faster Labor Contracts Act to help unions force their bosses to negotiate in good faith for their first contract sailed through 230-193 with 20 Republicans joining the Dems. 🗣️ Companion legislation has bipartisan support in the Senate, too. Let’s urge our senators to push for it to come to the floor with language here. 🗣️
LEARN TO BE AN EFFECTIVE ALLY AND PREVENT LGBTQ YOUTH SUICIDE WITH THE TREVOR PROJECT
More than a third of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered suicide in the past year, and one in 10 attempted it. But the Trevor Project has found that LGBTQ+ youth who have at least one accepting adult in their life are 40% less likely to attempt suicide. We can make a difference. The Trevor Project offers two free trainings for anyone who works with or cares for young people. Ally Training covers LGBTQ+ identities, terminology, and how to create safer spaces. CARE Training focuses on suicide prevention and how to recognize warning signs and connect a young person to help.This Pride Month, we can take an hour to learn how to show up for the LGBTQ+ young people in out lives. 🏫 We can sign up here for a Trevor Project training today. 🏫
PURSUING VOTING RIGHTS CLOSER TO HOME
Since the Supreme Court destroyed what little remained of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, lawmakers have gone wild in redrawing congressional lines to dilute the political power of voters of color. The road to rebuild will be long. One place we can start: making sure states pick up and pass their own voting rights acts where the federal government will now be absent. These include requiring local governments get state approval for certain changes to voting rules, ensuring voting materials are available in languages other than English, prohibiting electoral systems and maps that deny marginalized groups representation, barring voter intimidation, and creating legal paths for folks to secure justice when they’re blocked from the ballot box. 10 states already have them in place.

We can then join the fight to respond to Callais by accessing the NAACP’s toolkit and signing up to get connected with efforts already underway to move a voting rights act forward in our community here, and contact our legislators and governors in support of it working off language from the ACLU of Delaware here. ✊🏽
GETTING READY FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
Trump has tried and failed to lay exclusive claim to our country’s 250th anniversary for his tacky, corrupt celebration of himself. Now the real Americans he despises are going to make our voices heard. We have a number of mobilizations and events going on around Independence Day we can join to honor our history and continue the struggle for a more perfect nation.
🪧 Women’s March and the Veterans Against Fascism coalition will be bringing together vets, military families and other supporters in Philadelphia on July 4th for a march opposing authoritarianism, endless wars and attacks on our freedom. We can let them know we’ll be joining them here. 🪧
🪧 Women’s March is also calling for folks to hold satellite events nationwide over Independence Day weekend as a part of a Free America Weekend of Action. We can find some already scheduled near us here or sign up to host our own here. 🪧
🪧 Organizers across the country will also be coming to Washington D.C. from June 28th to July 4th for 7 Days in DC, a weeklong series of civic engagement activities, public demonstrations and cultural events organized by the anti-fascist collective FLARE designed to encourage direct participation in the democratic process. PRIMARY NIGHT WRAP-UP: PUSHING FORD IN NEVADA AND SOME NOW-CONFIRMED HOUSE NOMINEES
Another set of primaries is over and another set of general elections is underway! While we already knew most of the key Democrat picks in competitive races from yesterday’s votes and will need to wait for the results of the ranked choice counts for our nominees for governor and the Second Congressional District in Maine, we do now have our candidate to take on Republican incumbent governor Joe Lombardo in Nevada. State attorney general Aaron Ford won a sweeping victory in his primary, and will seek to secure our trifecta in Carson City again. This is one of our best state house pickup opportunities, with Nevadans suffering from a Trump-damaged tourism industry and some of the highest gas prices in the nation. 🫱🏻🫲🏿 We can sign up to help the Ford campaign here. 🫱🏾🫲🏼

In Montana:
Democrats have had their eyes on the Montana First Congressional District, in the western part of the state, since before incumbent GOP Rep. Ryan Zinke chose to call it quits. While red-leaning, it’s only ranked as an R+6 district, the kind that could be in reach in a wave election, and Zinke only won it by three points when he was first elected in 2022. And voters have nominated a different sort of Democrat: Sam Forstag, a working class kid turned union smoke-jumper who organized against Elon Musk’s cuts to the U.S. Forest Service and has run as a fierce, solutions-first populist. Forstag is refusing all corporate donations as he takes on Republican talk radio host Aaron Flint. 🙋🏻♀️ We can sign up to volunteer for his campaign here. 🙋🏻
In California:
The California 1st Congressional District elected Republican Assemblymember James Gallagher to Congress to fill the rest of the late Doug LaMalfa’s term… on its old lines. The post-Proposition 50 district, which gave 54% of its vote to Kamala Harris in 2024, advanced Gallagher and Democratic state senator Mike McGuire for the general election in November. McGuire centered health care affordability and the Medicaid cuts as he begins the post-primary stretch. 🙋🏻♂️ We can sign up to volunteer to help him unseat this newly minted incumbent here. 🙋🏽♂️
We finally had a call yesterday in the California Sixth Congressional District, where totally-not-a-Republican-anymore Congressman Kevin Kiley will be facing off against pediatrician and former state legislator Richard Pan in November. Kiley left the GOP after redistricting left him in a 53-44 Harris district, but he’s still backed by Speaker Mike Johnson, presumably as a thank you for his crucial vote in favor of the MAGA murder budget. Dr. Pan made his mark in Sacramento as a leader in the fight against the antivaxxers, writing laws that helped raise childhood vaccination rates to their highest level in 15 years in California, and he’s running to hold RFK Jr. accountable and stand up for public health and affordable care. 📢 We can follow and help boost his campaign on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky.📢
We also now know that progressive community college professor, school board trustee and small business owner Randy Villegas will be taking on incumbent Republican David Valadao in the California 22nd. Villegas is a Working Families Party Democrat who has championed single-payer health care and taken on corporate PAC money and is facing a political survivor who’s built an independent brand while voting to cut Medicaid and food assistance and supercharge ICE and CBP. 🙋🏻♂️ We can volunteer to help send Randy to Capitol Hill here. 🙋🏽♂️
In the California 48th District, which GOP Rep. Darrell Issa retired rather than defend, San Diego city councilmember Marni Von Wilpert will be the Democratic candidate against Republican and San Diego County supervisor Jim Desmond. This district has been redrawn to one that would have voted Harris by 3 points in 2024, and Von Wilpert – a former prosecutor, labor attorney and Peace Corps alumna focused on affordable health care and holding ICE accountable – should be in strong position. 🙋🏽♂️ We can sign up to volunteer for her campaign here. 🙋🏻♂️
