BACK ON THE CLOCK IN DC WHILE CALIFORNIA CONSIDERS GOING AFTER DETENTION CENTER PROFITS
The House has passed the government funding bill and the continuing resolution for Homeland Security appropriations and sent it to Trumpâs desk, ending the partial shutdown. We now have nine days to force meaningful change on Trumpâs secret police.
It will be a challenge. Designing limits the Trump regime will actually be bound by is a legislative nightmare, and as Pablo ManrĂquez has emphasized ICE has a $75 billion slush fund to work off regardless thanks to the MAGA murder budget. But there have been some heartening signs of spine, with multiple Democratic senators suggesting they wonât support another stopgap.

In the meantime, weâre starting to see state-level lawmakers getting more aggressive and more creative in doing what they can to throw a wrench in the deportation machine. In California, Assemblymember Matt Haney has introduced first-in-the-nation legislation (AB1633) that would impose a 50% tax on profits from private ICE detention centers and redirect the money to immigrant services.
Detainees at these camps and outside inspectors have reported overcrowding, inadequate medical care and access to food and water, and unsanitary conditions, and the companies running these concentration camps are getting rich off of it. The detention camp tax is a legally sound way of holding them accountable that gets us funds we need to repair the damage theyâre doing. đ Letâs reach out to our legislators and governors and ask them to pass a detention camp profits tax in our state. ICE WANTS TO WAREHOUSE PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES ARE FIGHTING BACK
Weâve learned a lot more in recent days about ICEâs efforts to build out their network of concentration camps to literally warehouse 80,000 people. Weâve also seen acts of resistance to it at the local level that we can learn a great deal from.
Eyes On Ice has featured the regimeâs drive to turn an auto parts warehouse in Chester, New York into a holding pen, and how town officials are using zoning regulations to stand in their way. Weâve also seen current owners of the warehouse sites they want to buy decline to sell under public pressure and city-passed moratoriums on new non-municipal detention facilities. While the federal government is positioned to overcome many of these obstacles, whatever we can do to slow them down helps. đ˛ Letâs read up on Chesterâs fight and do what we can to support them by signing this petition by Congressman Pat Ryan (D-NY) and donating to support the legal team who will stand up for us. đ˛

PUBLIC COMMENT DEADLINES ON PROTECTING CHILD CARE ACCESS, FUEL EFFICIENT CARS TODAY
Today marks our last opportunity to weigh in on two proposed Trump rules that would leave our children worse off.
The White House is attempting to roll back Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which Biden raised to ensure new cars are more fuel efficient. Itâs yet another gift to Big Oil, who are definitely getting their moneyâs worth out of this administration, and it will increase emissions on our rapidly warming planet. đ We can register our objections with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration here, and find a tool and language to use from Climate Hawks Vote here.đ
Theyâre also taking aim at Biden-era rules governing the Child Care and Development Fund, one of the largest federal funding sources for child care. Trumpâs plan would end enrollment-based payments and payments up front, making it harder for programs to plan ahead, pay staff on time and provide reliable care, and allow families to be charged more by removing the cap on co-payments. đWe can weigh in with the Department of Health and Human Services here, or use this tool from the National Domestic Workers Alliance here.đ

CA â WEEK OF ACTION FOR THE SUPER BOWL
The Super Bowl is coming to Santa Clara this Sunday, and like so much in Trumpâs America it might be poisoned by ICE. The NFL has claimed Homeland Security will not be conducting immigration enforcement at the game or in the area leading up to it, despite repeated threats from the regime. Thereâs concern they may go on anyways, especially with the right-wingâs continued anger at the selection of ICE critic (and chart-topping superstar) Bad Bunny for the halftime show. Either way, protesters are going to use this spotlight moment to make some joyful noise. 𪧠The Purge Palantir team and 50501 San Jose are among those scheduling protests and actions for the Super Bowl, starting with an ICE Kills, Palantir Profits vigil in Palo Alto tomorrow, protests at the ICE office in Morgan Hill on Friday and a game day rally in Santa Clara.
