Donald Trump has been dragging us towards an avoidable war with Iran ever since he blew up President Obama’s successful agreement to shut down their nuclear program in 2018. On June 21st, without congressional authorization or much public debate, he got his way, bombing three nuclear sites.
The President has claimed these strikes were an “spectacular success,” but his handpicked chairman of the Joint Chiefs has admitted we do not know what they accomplished, and will not for days. Vice-President Vance has insisted we are “not at war with Iran, but with Iran’s nuclear program,” apparently unaware the Iranian government gets a say in the extent of the conflict.
The immediate dangers are significant. 40,000 U.S. troops across the Middle East are at risk in counter-strikes. Iranian leaders are already threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, which would have massive implications for energy prices and our economy. Experts have also raised concerns about the prospect of terrorism and cyberattacks.
In the long term, we may well have made matters worse. In addition to further destabilizing the region, Trump’s own national intelligence director flatly told Congress earlier this year Iran was not building a nuclear weapon and their dormant program had not been reauthorized. Permanently ending their nuclear ambitions is likely to require an invasion and occupation, and analysts have warned we risk pushing Tehran to rush towards nuclear weapons now to deter future attacks.
Trump has taken us into a war that no one wanted – 60% of Americans have indicated in recent polling the U.S. military should not get involved in this conflict. He has put our young men and women in uniform, our national security and our long-term interests at risk without the nation’s approval. He has done so with zero legal authority, which Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has already suggested is grounds for impeachment, and apparently with minimal thought as to what comes next – the administration is unable to get on the same page about questions as basic as “are we seeking regime change in Iran?”
In a democracy, the people should be able to say no to wars of choice. That’s why Congress has the power to declare war under our Constitution. While this process has all too frequently been ignored in recent decades, with this reckless, thoughtless and tantrum-prone president it is past time for the legislative branch to reclaim its power. They need to step in and put a stop to Trump’s rampage before it goes any further.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) have introduced a measure under the 1973 War Powers Resolution to block U.S. strikes without congressional authorization, as has Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA). These are privileged resolutions, so they will get votes within a matter of days. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is pushing another measure to prohibit the use of federal funds or military forces to support Israel in war on Iran without consent from Congress.
Let’s reach out to our members of Congress making our opposition to this new Middle Eastern quagmire loud and clear and demanding their support for war powers resolutions to block further escalation. We can find call scripts below or send this message by texting SIGN PBOEUZ to 50409.
We can see where our members of Congress stand on the Iran war powers resolutions at 1833stopwar.com. They also have a petition to sign and will provide a script and connect us directly with our reps if we call 1-833-STOP-WAR (1-833-786-7927).

Hi, my name is _________, and I’m a constituent from (city, zip). (If voicemail, leave street address).
I am horrified and infuriated that Trump is dragging us into another Middle Eastern quagmire. I want ______ to vote to stop these strikes and block further escalation of his attacks on Iran. Do not rubber stamp this unnecessary, unpopular, half-baked war. Please publicly announce you will back measures like Rep. Massie and Khanna and Senator Kaine’s war powers resolutions - now.
TALKING POINTS TO USE:
We spent two decades with U.S. soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East. It cost us too many lives and too much money and we have far too little to show for it. No one wants to go back to that, and no one voted for that.
60% of American citizens, including 53% of Republicans, think the U.S. military should not get involved in this conflict
56%, including 61% of Republicans, think we should engage in negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.
It’s not clear how we can permanently stop Iran’s nuclear program without a full-on invasion and occupation. Anything short of that could get a lot of our troops and a lot of innocent civilians in multiple countries killed without solving anything.
Experts have warned that Iran may well conclude from these strikes that the only way to preserve their regime is to become a nuclear power.
This is a decision no one intended for just one man to make for America. And I don’t trust the Trump Administration to make it.
They’ve fired too many qualified generals, they’ve ignored basic security measures, and they’ve disrespected our troops too much.
They’re reckless and careless, and Congress needs to do their job and check their power.
We need diplomatic solutions to addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions in the long term.

These strikes may in fact encourage Iran to become a nuclear power.
This is a decision no one intended for just one man to make for America. And frankly I don’t trust the Trump Administration to make it. They’ve fired too many qualified generals, they’ve ignored basic security measures, and they’ve disrespected our troops too much. They’re reckless and careless, and Congress needs to do their job and check their power.
