Trump’s war against Iran is only growing worse, and skyrocketing prices at the pump are just the beginning of the costs. 13 American soldiers are dead, along with more than 1,500 Iranians – 175 in the double-tap strike on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab alone. But there are red lines he hasn’t crossed, the most notable being putting U.S. troops on the ground as we did in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It’s hard to gauge how much of a risk this is, since this administration clearly has no plan and can’t decide what their objectives are. But it does seem to be growing by the day. The Pentagon has already two Marine expeditionary units, the first of which is set to arrive Friday, to the Middle East, along with the 82nd Airborne. They are reportedly considering seizing the oil export hub at Kharg Island or attacks on the northern shore of the Straits of Hormuz. Regime allies in Congress have started to move the goal posts, claiming that taking Kharg Island would somehow not count as “boots on the ground” or an “invasion.”
This war is deeply unpopular, with less support than the war for Iraq had in 2014 and only 70% of Republicans on board. 68% of Americans, including 48% of Republicans, oppose putting troops on the ground. While Trump has managed to secure majority support on Capitol Hill on war powers so far, that coalition is likely more hesitant about putting our young men and women in Iranian territory. Let’s use that reluctance and make sure it’s off the table.

NO ON SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS
The most meaningful leverage point Congress will have against Trump’s war in the near future is on the question of how to pay for it. We’re anticipating the White House will ask for $50 billion in supplemental appropriations to fund our attacks on Iran. (Estimates from inside the Pentagon have gone as high as $200 billion.) They’re already spending $1 billion a day, enough to fully restore ACA tax credits and what they cut from Medicaid in Trumps budget. We lost the equivalent of 60 million school lunches just to Kuwaiti friendly fire alone.
This bill will be subject to a filibuster, so it’s impossible to pass without significant Democratic support. At this point, it’s unclear whether that’s possible. A handful of Dems have refused to rule out backing supplemental appropriations, even as they demand a real strategy from Trump first, and Minority Leader Jeffries has refused to commit to blocking it. The GOP is also considering attaching “sweeteners” such as much-needed and long-delayed wildfire aid to make it more palatable. There’s also obvious awareness in DC that a yes vote here would count as a backdoor authorization for a war the overwhelming majority of the caucus rejects. This is a fight we can win.

BACK A WINDFALL PROFITS TAX ON FOSSIL FUEL
The Iran War has cost the lives of more than 1,800 Iranian and Lebanese civilians and seven American soldiers so far, along with an estimated $10 billion of our money – enough to replace more than 20% of the lead pipes still in America’s water systems. Prices are skyrocketing. The Iranian regime remains in control.
But this war does have one winner: Trump’s donors in the fossil rule industry. Americans are now spending $200 million more a day for gas than we were a week ago. Companies that don’t rely on Persian Gulf supplies for oil or liquefied methane gas (Chevron, Shell, Total Energies, Venture Global, Cheniere) are popping champagne. Exporters and traders of American methane gas are set to earn nearly $1 billion more per week. It’s a gold mine for executives and shareholders, making their investment in this White House well worth it.
It doesn’t have to be this way. If Congress wanted to, they could enact a windfall profits tax to return that money to our pockets. This would dissuade Big Oil and Gas from price gouging and protect us from price shocks. Analysts estimate putting this in place after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could have guaranteed the average American household $1,715 in relief. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who championed this idea in 2022, has introduced a bill with Rep. Ro Khanna to do just that: the Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax (S.4111/H.R.7960). Activists led by Fossil Free Media are calling on our reps to step up and stop Trump’s backers from war profiteering. TRUMP’S FINANCIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
As we’ve harped on, Trump’s justifications for his war of choice against Iran have changed by the hour. Sometimes it’s about the nuclear program he claimed to have obliterated. Sometimes it’s about freedom for the Iranian people, though he’s also indicated a willingness to reach a deal with new de facto Iranian leader Ali Larijani, the mastermind of the mass slaughter of protesters in January. And sometimes it’s about how Tehran would soon have intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of striking the United States.
While that last claim is a lie, Iran has amply demonstrated they do have the power to hit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, three countries which have massively personally enriched Trump and his family. As Judd Legum and the Popular Information team detail here:
The Saudi government’s funds have invested $2 billion with Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner’s private equity firm and teamed up with him for a $55 billion purchase of a video game company. They also financed a $7 billion development deal in Saudi Arabia with the Trump organization.
A member of the Emirati royal family invested $500 million in the Trump family cryptocurrency company. The country’s sovereign wealth fund also invested $200 million with Kushner’s firm.
The government of Qatar gave Trump a $400 million jet. A Qatari investor also reportedly put hundreds of millions of dollars into Kushner.
We’ve already seen these countries get suspicious benefits from the White House in the wake of bribing our president, including an unprecedented security guarantee for Qatar and the approval of the UAE importing powerful AI chips. And while Trump could not be bothered to get the public or Congress on board before sending our sons and daughters into combat, his administration has reportedly talked closely with these regional allies in the weeks leading up to the war. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Emiratis were apparently major advocate for strikes behind closed doors, even while they urged diplomacy in public.
It all raises some alarming questions:
How did the Gulf states’ sponsorships of Trump impact his decision to take our country into an unnecessary war?
How will his personal financial interests be weighed against our national interest as the war goes on?
Can we really believe the billions of dollars at stake for him are playing zero role?
Is this truly about America, or is it a payoff wrapped in the Stars and Stripes?
With six Americans, more than 500 Iranians and several dozen civilians across the Middle East already dead, we need folks at the highest levels of power seeking answers for us.
Let’s push our members of Congress to start speaking up. We need a full investigation into Trump’s relationships with these states and his administration’s consultations with them ahead of the war. His and his team’s conflicts of interests should be fully exposed, and they should be held to account for them. And we need to spotlight any way Trump personally profits from his decisions in the months ahead.

Deploying our young men and women onto Iranian territory will mean more bloodshed on both sides, further complicate our efforts to end this conflict and could lead to dangerous consequences this administration is clearly not ready to handle.
The White House took us into battle with no clear objectives and no strategy for getting us out. They keep promising this won’t be another Iraq, but they also pledged to avoid exactly this sort of military adventure and lied to us about why they did it. And let’s be clear - seizing Kharg Island or “securing the strait” is an invasion, and it’s insulting to pretend otherwise.
It is incumbent on Congress to prepare for the worst and try to head it off at the pass, and putting our troops even more directly in harm’s way with a plan Trump and Hegseth are making up as they go along certainly qualifies.
We’ve all seen this before. We just spent two decades with our troops killing and dying in forever wars in the Middle East. It cost us too many lives and too much money and gained us far too little. We are not going back to that.

Trump’s war of choice on Iran has sent prices at the pump skyrocketing, and the best this administration can come up with to soften the blow is a band-aid: suspending the federal gas tax. Congress should focus on real solutions, like passing a windfall profits tax to get our money back from war profiteer CEOs at fossil fuel companies.
A federal gas tax “holiday” seems like low-hanging fruit. But it will only lower costs by 10 to 16 cents at a moment when we’re headed towards a national average price of $5 a gallon. It’s also going to mean either a larger deficit or fewer repairs for our highways and mass transit. This is not the relief from the affordability crisis we need.
Meanwhile, while we’re struggling to make ends meet, the megadonors in the fossil fuel industry are making out like bandits. In the first month of the conflict, they made an estimated $30 million an hour extra for the same amount of oil, and they could ultimately clear more than $200 billion in excess profits. A windfall profits tax would retrieve some of the fortune they’re raking in from the bloodshed and return that money directly to American households – refilling our wallets and discouraging them artificially inflating prices moving forward. Senator Whitehouse and Rep. Khanna have already introduced S.4111/H.R.7960 to do just that.
Analysts found a similar measure passed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could have put more than $1700 back in our pockets. That’s a real difference. Please ignore the gas tax holiday distraction and publicly endorse, co-sponsor and fight to pass the Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act ASAP.

As America enters yet another war for regime change, there is an eerie silence about whether it’s for our best interests or those of Middle Eastern elites who invested billions in our president.
Regardless of the Trump Administration’s lies, the United States was not at imminent risk of being attacked by Iran. Our own intelligence suggests they were years away from having the capacity to fire missiles at our soil. They did, however, clearly pose a greater danger to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The ruling families and governments of these nations have massively enriched Donald Trump and his family. They’ve poured billions into his son-in-law’s private equity firm and teamed up with Jared Kushner and the Trump Organization on multiple multi-billion dollar projects. The Emirati national security adviser owns 49% of the Trumps’ cryptocurrency company. The state of Qatar even gave him a $400 million jet. We have already seen them get deeply suspicious benefits in the wake of these bribes, including an unprecedented security guarantee to Qatar and the okay of an AI chip sale to the UAE that could allow China access to our technology.
The Trump White House could not be bothered to seek the approval of Congress or the public before sending our sons and daughters into combat, but they consulted closely with these nations as regional allies during the weeks leading up to the strikes. Only one in four Americans supported striking Iran, but the Saudi and Emirati governments were all on board, and unlike us they got what they asked for from this administration.
American service members and countless civilians are dying, and there is plenty of bloodshed still ahead of us. There should not be any doubt as to why or who it will serve. And can anyone really believe that the billions of dollars at play for Donald Trump will have zero influence on his decision-making?
How did the Gulf states’ sponsorship of Trump impact his choice to take us into this unnecessary war? How will his personal financial gains be weighed against what’s good for the country as the war goes on? Is this about America, or is it a payoff? We need to know. And not enough powerful people are asking.
At the very minimum, we need members of Congress to speak up about Trump’s conflicts of interest. But more than that, please push for a full investigation into the President’s ties with these states and his administration’s consultations with them ahead of the war. His and his team’s financial ties should be fully exposed, and they should be held to account for them. Furthermore, please be sure to use your position to spotlight any way Trump personally profits from his wartime decisions in the months ahead.
