WHAT WILL WE DO IF TRUMP DEFIES THE COURTS?
The Trump Administration has taken defeat after defeat in the courts this week, and like all authoritarians they have responded by recommitting to their attacks on the legitimacy of those who dare to check their power. Elon Musk has again been insisting that judges cannot block the actions of the President and those who do must be removed, and multiple senior Trump Justice Department nominees testified before the Senate during their confirmation hearings that some court orders can be ignored. Matters may come to a head soon – Trump’s appeals of orders they’ve been resisting to release seized foreign aid funds are now before the Supreme Court. This is a constitutional crisis in motion, and it might be fast approaching the moment when it can no longer be ignored. Let’s once again reach out to our members of Congress and elected leaders on all levels of government and ask if they have a plan for how they will respond if the White House explicitly rejects the checks of the judiciary – and demand they publicly commit to using all tools available to them to preserve the rule of law and our Constitution. We can use scripts and language here. Let’s also make our own plans for how we’ll respond, starting with making sure we are plugged into the local networks where we can hear about immediate calls to protest.
FIGHT FOR THE WORKERS WHO SERVE US
Regardless of how many hoops Musk and Trump force federal workers to jump through, at the end of the day they don’t give a damn what federal workers did last week, and the mass firings will go on no matter what they accomplish. But Americans should care – these are the folks who keep our food and medicine safe, our water and air clean, who make sure our Social Security checks arrive, and fight with limited resources to keep big corporations in check. It’s good for Elon and his fellow billionaires to get rid of them, since they get to pocket the savings in tax cuts for themselves and profit from fewer protections against their abuses. But regular people will pay for it with the services we depend on. We need to stand up for these folks and the important work they do. The Federal Unionists Network, which organized last week’s #SaveOurServices actions, are planning on continuing making their voices heard to protect federal jobs and our public services. Let’s sign up to get updates on future events from them at go.savepublicservices.com. And let’s be sure to let our members of Congress know we oppose the federal layoffs and slashing of services – we can use this script from 5Calls, and supplement it with information from this tool from the Economic Policy Institute on how many federal workers are in our state or congressional district.
REINSTATE IMMIGRATION JUDGES AND DUE ASYLUM PROCESS Despite huge backlogs in asylum cases, immigration judges are among those getting axed by Elon Musk’s DOGE henchmen. Meanwhile, jails are becoming overcrowded because of the administration’s new detention policy, in some cases forcing them to release violent criminals in order to lock up immigrants. Let’s make sure to amplify these truths when we talk to our neighbors, networks, family, and elected officials about immigration, emphasizing that the administration’s policies are not keeping us safe and further more and the so called “Department of Government Efficiency” is being extremely inefficient in creating even larger backlogs in litigating asylum cases - and let our members of Congress know we want these judges reinstated. (And if we’re struggling to keep up with all the developments in Trump’s immigration crackdown, here’s an incredible interactive, searchable resource from the Immigration Policy Tracking Project.)
SHARE GUIDE TO GETTING LIFE-SAVING PROCEDURES IN ABORTION BAN STATES
A yearlong investigation by ProPublica revealed how abortion laws are affecting medical care for women experiencing pregnancy loss. Many women who had miscarriages faced delays or denials of necessary procedures, experiencing unnecessary pain and suffering and potential loss of life because of the confusion now surrounding abortion restrictions. These procedures, often used to treat miscarriage, are now approached with caution by some doctors who fear legal repercussions, leading to poor care. Women spoke about their terrifying experiences, feeling unprepared and unaware that abortion laws were influencing their treatment. In response, ProPublica created a guide with input from medical experts to help women navigate these challenges, find appropriate care, and prepare for emergencies. The guide includes information about miscarriage treatment options, finding supportive doctors, and what to do if care is delayed or denied. We can find and share this guide to life saving procedures for pregnant people in abortion ban states here.
#PROTECTOURKIDS DAY OF ACTION WITH TEACHERS’ UNIONS ON MARCH 4TH
Our public schools are under attack. Trump and the GOP are threatening to defund them if they teach accurate history, include all kids and don’t bully trans students. They’re attempting to funnel money away from public education to corporations. And they’re trying to eliminate the Department of Education and laying the groundwork for cutting federal aid to schools. We need to stand up for our kids. The American Federation of Teachers is calling on parents, teachers, friends and neighbors to mobilize for a #ProtectOurKids day of action on March 4th, highlighting the damage the MAGA war on public schools will do by letting those directly impacted speak and building public pressure on policymakers. We can find an event near us or geared for our state here – and if we’d like to organize one, we can find a toolkit with everything we need here and a hosting form to register here. We can also do our part from home, using this sample language to let our members of Congress know we oppose Trump’s plan to gut federal support for public schools along with this information on how it will affect each state, share graphics and video from here on social media, and submit a video story of how losing funding for teachers, special education, career programs or student aid would affect us and our family here. (While we’re getting ready, we can also call our senators to ask them to oppose Linda McMahon’s confirmation as Education Secretary using the National Education Association’s scripts by texting ACTION to 48744.)
DISABILITY DAY OF MOURNING
From the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN): "In the past five years, over 542 people with disabilities have been murdered by their parents, relatives, or caregivers. Every year on March 1st, the disability community gathers across the nation to remember disabled victims of filicide–disabled people murdered by their family members or caregivers." Considering the extensive attacks that the Trump administration and Republican attorneys general have already waged on people with disabilities, let's make a point to show up and support our disabled community. Let's continue calling our MoC and telling them to vote down any legislation that cuts funding for Medicaid and reaching out to our state attorney general to demand that they protect Section 504. Then, let's learn more about the Disability Day of Mourning and sign up to attend a local or virtual vigil.
