SENATE GOP WANTS TO VOTE ON MAGA MURDER BUDGET THURSDAY

The Senate GOP leadership is aiming to vote on their version of the MAGA murder budget as soon as Thursday. This is going to be a challenge, because they are still frantically rewriting it in the wake of the Senate parliamentarian advising that multiple sections do not pass the Byrd rule and a number of holdouts are still not on board. The parliamentarian is not expected to finish her work before tomorrow, and plans to release the final text yesterday fell apart.

In short, there’s a lot still in the air – and they still have to get whatever they cobble together through the House. (The Congressional Progressive Caucus Center has put together a guide to the differences so far between the Senate and House bills here.)

With the bill hanging in the balance, we need to make sure we’re flooding every senator’s office with calls. If we haven’t registered our own opposition in a while, today should be the day. IRAN WAR POWERS RESOLUTION STILL ON AGENDA

Yesterday saw Iran launch a measured and limited retaliatory strike at US forces in Qatar without reported injuries and Trump declaring a ceasefire between Israel and the U.S. and Iran. The President continues to claim we have obliterated Iran’s nuclear program without evidence. Needless to say, things are changing quickly, and the ceasefire may or may not ultimately hold.

In the meantime, while Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has said he will not keep pushing for a war powers resolution if hostilities cease, Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) is still moving forward, and said yesterday he expects a vote on barring Trump from taking further military action against Iran without congressional approval between tomorrow and Friday. Let’s be sure to reach out to our senators to let them know that ceasefire or no, we want them to vote to block further escalation when this resolution comes up and to encourage diplomacy rather than more bloodshed. TRUMP HATCHETMAN EMIL BOVE SET FOR HEARING BEFORE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

Long after Trump is gone, the judges he appoints will still be shaping the law and the Constitution. Tomorrow, one of the most dangerous judicial nominees of Trump 2.0 so far will go before the Senate Judiciary Committee: Emil Bove. Bove is Trump’s former personal attorney and was his pick to impose his will on the Justice Department. During his time at DoJ, he has been a central player in the White House’s efforts to use law enforcement as a political weapon, notoriously ordering federal prosecutors to drop charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams after Adams’ attorneys promised he would assist with the Trump’s priorities on immigration, purging career officials and attempting to initiate an investigation on thousands of agents who worked on prosecuting insurrectionists.

Let’s reach out to our senators and tell them they need to reject Bove’s nomination. And especially if they’re on the Judiciary Committee, they need to need to use his hearing tomorrow to publicly hold him to account for his role in the Adams quid pro quo. PROTESTS AGAINST ICE COLLABORATORS THIS WEEKEND

Yesterday, the Supreme Court put on hold a lower court judge’s ruling that blocked Trump from deporting people to “third countries” they have no connection with without a meaningful opportunity to argue they were being put in danger or challenge the decision. This comes in the wake of a new report from the Cato Institute revealing that 65% of people booked into immigration detention by ICE this fiscal year have no criminal convictions – and 93% were never convicted of any violent offenses. In short, the deportation machine is revving up, and it’s rolling over tens of thousands of innocent people’s lives.

This weekend, the Stop Avelo Coalition will continue its efforts to slow it down by targeting the corporate collaborators running deportation flights. Protests will be held pressuring Avelo to stop assisting with abductions in cities across the country Thursday through Sunday. Let’s see if there’s one in our area we can join here – and we can keep checking back, as new events are still being added.

ADVOCATE FOR SUPPORT AND RESOURCES FOR FEDERAL WORKERS

Federal workers live in every state in the union, and, at least before the Trump onslaught, there were 3 million of them across the country. To see how many federal workers are potentially impacted by Trump’s firing spree in our state, let’s consult this resource. Then, let’s tell the governor of our state that we want them to create a website, similar to this one created by Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, where federal workers can turn for support and resources with employment insurance, health insurance, foreclosure assistance, family resources, student loan help, mental health support, and more.
