June 25, 2025 - Is Trump Canceling July 4th?
No. But it's possible the GOP might spend Independence Day trying to pass the murder budget. Plus multiple ways to oppose the deportation machine and more

“HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, WE’RE TAKING YOUR HEALTH CARE”
Republicans are in a big hurry to pass their bill gutting Medicaid to pay for billionaire tax cuts.
Donald Trump demanded this morning that Congress not leave town until Republicans send the MAGA murder budget to his desk. Republican Majority Leader John Thune has already pledged to delay the July 4th break until the Senate acts and has promised votes this weekend, and Speaker Mike Johnson has asked House Republicans not to remain in the area in case they pass something. All of this adds up to the chance of a few long, hot few days in Washington. Divides remain on Medicaid and state and local tax cut deductions, they’re still trying to figure out how to get their parliamentarian-vetoed cuts to SNAP back in the bill (although they are making progress), new estimates put the pricetag at $4.2 trillion, Byrd rulings are ongoing, and the Freedom Caucus is already fiercely objecting to the Senate’s proposed changes. Trump is putting the pressure on, but it’s not clear yet what might be able to get a majority on both sides of Capitol Hill.
Why the rush? Because they know the more the public hears about this bill the more they hate it, and they want to push it over the finish line before too many people tune in. So our job is spreading the word and slowing down the process.
If we have Democratic senators, let’s make sure we reach out to them today and tell them to use all procedural tools available to slow down this rush to passage. We can find language and ideas on what they can do here.
And for all of us who have already lit up the phones to our own elected officials, let’s keep putting in the work to make sure more people do the same. Here are some phonebanks to rally voters in key states to call against the murder budget we can join today:

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE SUPREME COURT ELECTION MATTERS TO ALL OF US
This November, Pennsylvania voters will decide whether its state supreme court will be a pro-democracy court or a MAGA court. Three of its seven justices are up for re-election. If just two of them lose to Republicans, the court will take a hard-right turn. That’s bad news for Pennsylvanians who care about public education, workplace protections, LGBTQ rights, the environment, and more. It’s also bad news for Americans who care about voting rights in this highly consequential Electoral College state, and who want congressional representation based on fairness, not on hyper-partisan gerrymandering (example).
One of the easiest and most impactful ways we can help is to increase voter turnout among likely Democratic voters by writing letters with Vote Forward. Here’s a sample letter written by a Rogan’s List contributor. Let’s consult Vote Forward’s letter-writing “how-to” guide, and then let’s sign up and start writing letters to PA voters!

TOMORROW WE HEAD TO COURTHOUSES TO CAST A LIGHT ON THOSE DISAPPEARED
People are being disappeared by the government of the United States. They’re being snatched off our streets and from their jobs. They’re showing up to their scheduled ICE check-ins and never coming back. This is not something we can quietly accept, or allow those around us to ignore.
Tomorrow, activists around the country are asking folks to show up to courthouses, federal buildings and town squares across America for a photo petition – taking pictures with posters of those who have been disappeared and flooding social media with their stories. Let’s be sure to attend one of the Disappeared in America actions near us.
If we can’t make it, we can still help spread the word. We can join the social media action and highlight one of the cases featured at disappearedinamerica.com. We can join community groups like those in Los Angeles who are putting up missing posters, along with monitoring ICE activity in our neighborhoods. And we can share and spread the word about the U.S. Disappeared Tracker.
PUSHING BACK AGAINST THE DETENTION CAMP ARCHIPELAGO
One of the biggest limitations on Trump’s mass deportation efforts – and one of the motives behind his insistence on ignoring due process – is that our current infrastructure simply does not have the resources to hold the number of people he and Stephen Miller want to detain. ICE currently has 41,000 beds available for detainees and are holding at least 48,000 people, contributing to terrible conditions for those they’ve locked away. The administration aims to build a full deportation camp archipelago across the country, with at least 100,000 beds.
By blocking their expansion plans, we can throw a wrench in the deportation machine. This starts with resisting efforts to fund the camps in the MAGA murder budget, but much of their growth will be through agreements with local governments and detention facilities, so there’s plenty to be done right in our own communities. Tomorrow at 1PM, the Detention Watch Network is hosting a webinar featuring activists from New Jersey, California and Kansas who have been fighting to block these contracts. We can register here to learn more and get plugged in to these efforts.
DWN is also encouraging folks to push their senators specifically against funding for mass detention and mass deportation. We can find language to use here.
ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO WEAKEN WORKER PROTECTION FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES
Stop us if we’ve said this before: the Trump Administration is trying to undermine due process and make it easier to purge the federal workforce.
The Office of Personnel Management has proposed a new rule that would fast-track removal of federal employees for “suitability” reasons if they’re accused of misconduct and limit their ability to appeal their dismissals. A lawyer for the Federal Workers Legal Defense Network compared it to efforts to expedite firing of Veterans Affairs employees during Trump’s first term, which ended in more than 100 fired employees being reinstated and $134 million in payouts to others who were let go. They also warned language on nondisclosure obligations could subject federal employees to firings for reporting waste, fraud and abuse to the Office of the Special Counsel or Congress.
The OPM is accepting public comments on this rule through July 3rd. Let’s submit ours here and let them know public servants deserve a fair hearing just like everyone else and warn against efforts to purge employees who have done the right thing for “disloyalty.”

Fight this bill. Do not let his grandstanding and incompetent lies distract from his attempts to codify his bad intentions for our country. America deserves our efforts to celebrate together and preserve our constitutional community. Don't give up now. History is on our side.
