Maga Murder Budget Passes House, 218-214

Earlier this afternoon, House Republicans passed the MAGA murder budget 218-214. Only two Republicans, Thomas Massie and Brian Fitzpatrick, joined every Democrat in opposition. The bill, which will massively invest in concentration camps and the secret police and cut taxes for billionaires while we lose health care, food assistance and affordable energy to pay for it, is headed to Donald Trump’s desk.

We’ve been waiting to put out today’s edition until we knew the final outcome of the MAGA murder budget vote, and waiting to write it until we knew what to say. It has not become easier.

We’ve known from the beginning that Trump would cause terrible suffering if he regained the presidency, and we have known for a long time that it was a strong possibility most of this horrifyingly cruel and destructive bill would become law. Today is still a hard blow to absorb, and we know there are more to come. Repairing the damage and moving forward again will be the work of years, not days.

As difficult as that it is to accept, it should also be taken as permission to look after ourselves. Making sure we can stay in the fight over the long haul will sometimes mean resting from it. We strongly encourage everyone to do what it takes over the next few days to decompress.

If what we need to do to decompress is to act…. that’s what Rogan’s List is here for. Here are a few things we can do over the holiday weekend:

Keep yelling at our elected officials. This will not be the last dangerous piece of legislation this Congress will be asked to rubber stamp, and we cannot stop pressuring them now. If they’re Republicans, let’s contact them to let them know we will make them pay for their betrayal of the American people. And if they’re Democrats, let’s let them know we appreciated their stand and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries’ effort to delay the bill and want to see more efforts like that in the future, taking advantage of any and all procedural tools to impede Trump’s agenda.

Start the work of holding them accountable. In 16 months, we have the chance to remove Mike Johnson and John Thune from their positions of authority and take control of Capitol Hill. Let’s do some reading and pick a Republican in a competitive seat who we’re motivated to do our part to defeat, find a local political organization who is starting the work to beat them and see what we can do to get involved with their efforts.

Get ready to care for and protect our communities. In the coming weeks and months, we are going to see more and more of our friends and neighbors targeted by the deportation machine, losing their health care, struggling to pay their grocery and electric bills. We need to be prepared to take care of each other. Let’s take time over the next few days to find mutual aid and community support networks we connect and volunteer with, making sure we know exactly what our plans are to do our part.

Prepare to step up the work of resistance. This is a moment when more of us need to be moving up the ladder of engagement – from awareness protest and standard democratic process to the work of strategic non-violent non-compliance, disrupting the status quo as the status quo becomes unacceptable.
