NEW BILL CRACKING DOWN ON CHILD LABOR
Child labor violations have been rising dramatically, and Republicans in multiple states have been responding by trying to ease legal barriers on this crime. Democratic lawmakers led by Senators Sherrod Brown, Bob Casey and Patty Muray and Rep. Rosa DeLauro aren’t taking this lying down. They’ve introduced the Children Harmed in Life-Threatening or Dangerous (CHILD) Labor Act (bill # TBD), which significantly increases the minimum civil and criminal penalties for breaking child labor laws, holds big corporations responsible for violations by smaller businesses they subcontract with, allows children who have been seriously injured on the job to sue their employers, and authorizes the Department of Labor to put warning labels on goods manufactured with child labor and issue a stop worker order to any person who breaks these laws. Let’s contact our members of Congress and urge them to support this legislation.KEEP VA BLUE!

SPEAK OUT FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Regardless of how we feel about the complicated situation in Israel and Gaza, depriving civilians of food, water, fuel, electricity is beyond the scope of what is considered allowable in international conflict. Desperate people are now breaking into UN warehouses, depleting the meager resources that are left. We can help by continuing to press our MoCs and the White House to call for an immediate ceasefire and an opening in the border to allow humanitarian aid.
WHO’S NEXT TO END “RIGHT TO WORK FOR LESS”
We’re in a new, inspiring moment of worker advocacy in the United States, as Americans once again acknowledge that unions mean better wages and benefits for all workers and strengthen our communities and our democracy. But in many states, the power of unions to make change is burdened by so-called “right to work” laws that make it harder to organize. Earlier this year, Michigan became the first state in decades to repeal “right to work.” Now, activists in Arizona want to keep the momentum going. A coalition of unions and progressives is pushing for a ballot initiative to strike “right-to-work” language from the state constitution, aiming for a vote next November. Let’s show our support by signing up to donate and volunteer with Arizona Works Together and following them on social media.
TURN THE TABLES IN THE NRA
The NRA, perhaps the best-known “gun rights” organization in the US, tracks bills introduced in state legislatures and offers a tool for people to contact their state legislators about pending gun bills. They urge people to oppose gun safety bills, and support bills that would have the effect of expanding access to guns. We want the opposite, so let’s turn the tables. Let’s consult the NRA’s list of pending legislation. If there’s a bill pending in our state, let’s contact our state legislators and tell them to support the bill if it furthers gun safety, and oppose the bill if it makes it easier to get and use guns.

WA - VOTE IN WASHINGTON STATE
Ballots were mailed October 20 in the vote-by-mail state of Washington. The state elections site has deadlines, registration information (including same-day, in-person), FAQs, and guides to candidates and issues. Vote.WA.gov has ballot drop box locations, and the ballot tracker. Let’s make sure our vote counts and help others make a voting plan.
